Woman Seriously Injured by Police Van – Bideford

Police have advised that at approximately 7.17pm on Wednesday 6 March 2013, a serious road traffic collision took place involving a marked police van a woman pedestrian on New Road in Bideford.

It was in the vicinity of Longbridge Wharf. The woman injured in the collision sustained a life threatening head injury.  She is 28 years old.

Initially the casualty was taken to North Devon District Hospital but was later air lifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

The driver of the police vehicle, a serving officer, was uninjured.

The police van was on routine patrol and travelling in the direction of Torrington when the women crossed in front of the van

The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Officers from the serious collisions investigation unit would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them on 101 and quote log 738 of 6 March 2013.

  • The police officer involved in the road traffic collision has been suspended from driving pending the outcome of the investigation.

    The matter has been voluntarily referred to the IPPCC.
    The force has asked Avon & Somerset police to oversee the investigation.
