Woman Drowns in Bude

The very sad news announced this evening by Devon and Cornwall Police is that the woman caught in the earlier incident at Northcott Beach has died.
Police were called by HM Coastguard to Northcott in Bude today,  after a woman was recovered from the sea.
The woman – believed to be in her early 50s – appears to have got in to trouble while in the water at Northcott Mouth Beach at around 2pm.
She and one of her children were removed from the water with the help of the coastguard, lifeguards and other beach-goers.
She was airlifted to North Devon District Hospital by a Royal Naval helicopter where she was later pronounced dead.
Next-of-kin are being informed at this time.
She is believed to have been with her two teenage children at the time. The children are unharmed.
Our thoughts and condolences fo out to her family, especially her two sons.

  • The brave woman who died trying to rescue her sons is now known to be from Wellington, Somerset. Alison Tooby was a volunteer at Langford Budville Primary School, previously attended by her two sons. Local people, shocked by the tragic event, described her as “warm-hearted and caring”.
