What do L-plates mean to you?

Was driven in to Bude by my daughter this morning. She is learning to drive, had her L-plates on and was going at an appropriate speed for the road when a white van overtook at some speed coming up to a decent bend, which he proceeded to take too fast partly on the wrong side of the road.

Interesting approach. I was wondering what part of an L-plate some drivers don’t understand. To me, it is a sign to be careful, to perhaps slow down, that things may be unpredictable as the person is still learning a skill, rather than an opportunity to speed up and undertake a dangerous manoeuvre working on the assumption that the learner will move out of the way and make the right decision. In the event, she handled the situation well. Lucky, really.
