What can and cannot stay open?

This comes from this Government document.


What can stay open?  


  1. Food delivery and takeaway can remain operational.
  2. Supermarkets and other food shops, health shops, pharmacies including non-dispensing pharmacies, petrol stations, bicycle shops, home and hardware shops, laundrettes and dry cleaners, bicycle shops, garages, car rentals, pet shops, corner shops, newsagents, post offices, and banks.
  3. Market stalls which offer essential retail, such as grocery and food.
  4. Where people live permanently in caravan parks or are staying in caravan parks as interim abodes where their primary residence is not available, they may continue to do so.
  5. Facilities may remain open for the purpose of hosting essential voluntary or public services, such as food banks or homeless services.
  6. Funerals following the social distancing guidance; places of worship should remain open for solitary prayer. Live streaming of a service without an audience would be permissible.
  7. Cinema, theatre and concert: Live streaming of a performance by a small group could be permissible with social distancing observed.
  8. Hotels, B & Bs, etc: Where people live in these as interim abodes whilst their primary residence is unavailable they may continue to do so. Key workers can continue to stay in hotels or similar where required.


What has to close?


  1. Restaurants.
  2. Cafes, including workplace canteens.
  3. Public houses.
  4. Bars and nightclubs, including bars in hotels or members’ clubs.
  5. Hair, beauty and nail salons, including piercing and tattoo parlours.
  6. Massage parlours.
  7. All retail with notable exceptions listed above.
  8. Outdoor and indoor markets
  9. Auction houses.
  10. Car showrooms.
  11. Hotels, hostels, BnBs, campsites and boarding houses for commercial use.
  12. Caravan parks/sites for commercial uses.
  13. Libraries.
  14. Community centres, youth centres and similar.
  15. Places of worship for services.
  16. Cinemas, theatres and concert halls.
  17. Museums and galleries.
  18. Bingo halls, casinos and betting shops.
  19. Spas.
  20. Skating rinks.
  21. Fitness studios, gyms, swimming pools or other indoor leisure centres.
  22. Arcades, bowling alleys, soft play centres and similar.
  23. Enclosed spaces in parks, including playgrounds, sports courts and pitches, and outdoor gyms or similar.
