By Lucille Opie:
This year of 2019 marks the 200th anniversary of the beginning of the building of the historic Bude Canal. It is indeed an anniversary to be proud of. The canal and the sea pool are the two most important assets, the ‘Bread and Butter’ to the town, both for its holiday trade and for the great enjoyment of the local community.
Most local people will know that after many years of deterioration, and before the North Cornwall District Council was replaced by Cornwall Council, funding was found in 2007 and three years later our Canal was regenerated. There can’t be many people who live in the Bude area today who haven’t walked the two miles along the footpath to the Weir at Whalesborough and appreciated stopping to admire the wildlife and the flora and fauna along the way; a magical experience one never tires of!
The Bude Canal & Harbour Society is a Registered Charity consisting of a number of Trustees who appreciate and care about the canal. The present trustees, all who have been in situ for many years, with one exception are all over 70 years of age. We are therefore appealing for volunteers. This is not arduous work, it means attending monthly meetings at the Falcon Hotel to plan and help run a few events in Bude during the year in order to raise funds to maintain the Society and create a surplus which is set aside for projects to improve the canal. The Society also keeps in contact with Cornwall Council about the state of the Canal.
We need some younger people to join us. In particular, the Society needs a treasurer and a membership secretary; someone who is interested in the canal and has some understanding of accounting and the keeping of membership records. If there is anyone out there who enjoys using the Canal and who is prepared to become a Trustee, please consider and have a think about it. Contact our secretary Peter Daniel on 01288 341 653 or Chris Jewell on 01288 352 298 to find out more.
