The shortest day of the year…

Winter Solstice is always a time for optimism as the days will very gradually start to grow longer once 21st December, the shortest day and longest night of the year north of the equator, has passed.

The sun is at its lowest point in the Northern Hemisphere today but the actual moment of the solstice in 2021 will occur at 3.59pm in the UK.

Solstice means ‘the sun stands still’ (from the latin) but is the Winter Solstice the start of winter, or midwinter? The jury is out. Most meteorologists see winter as starting on December 1st but the coldest days are generally yet to come in January/February.

You probably won’t notice the increase in light for some time yet, but just the knowledge that it is coming is enough for many of us to feel instantly more positive …
