One of the first priorities when I came to live in North Cornwall more than twenty years ago was to make a garden out of the field that stretched in front of our house. So it came as a bit of a shock to discover that gardening in this wild and windy part of North Cornwall was even more challenging than coping with the heavy limey clay of my native Bristol.
Luckily a kind neighbour introduced me to Juliotter Garden Club where I soon learned what to plant, where to plant it and what to avoid because it disliked the wind as much as I did. And along the way I made a lot of new friends because the members are a very welcoming, informal bunch bound together by our love of gardens and gardening. And to be honest, almost as many people join gardening clubs for the social get-togethers as those that join to learn more about how to do it, according to a survey from the Royal Horticultural Society. And it’s certainly true of our club.
We love our outings, our summer barbecue and our winter post-Christmas dinner. Our meetings are always fun, whether we have a guest speaker or a garden-themed get-together with mulled wine and snacks. And we enjoy four newsletters a year as well as monthly emails to keep us in touch with all that’s happening, plus discounts at several local nurseries as well as club bulk buys from seed catalogues, and an annual plant sale.
All in all, we think the club membership fee (currently £15 a year) is just about the best value for money around. New faces are always sure of a warm welcome whether as a guest to test the waters or as anew member. We meet in the brand-new hall at Otterham on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 7.30.
