Singers Jan Baker and Robert Barber, and pianist Peter Clarke, who recently became members of Connect Bude (the group that is campaigning to reconnect Bude and Holsworthy to the National Railway Network) have kindly offered to raise awareness and funds for Connect Bude, by performing their celebrated exploration of the life and music of Donald Swann, highlighting his celebrated duo partnership with Michael Flanders.
This delightful two-hour show might be subtitled “A Transport of Delight “ – a fitting entertainment for supporters of Connect Bude.
Included are a song of the lost trams, one about the 97 horse-powered, diesel engine London Omnibus, and of course, the disappeared, forever loved Slow Train. The success of these and many other songs composed for the Flanders and Swann shows obscured Swann’s other side as a prolific composer of art songs. We discover the musical genius behind the witty roundelays and sophisticated charm of the Flanders and Swann phenomenon, alongside his powerful, lyrical settings of words by Shakespeare, Yeats, Tolkien and others.
The performance has been warmly received in North Devon and now comes to Bude on Wed 10 April at 7.30pm at The Falcon Hotel. All tickets are £8.00 and are available via wegottickets, Spencer Thorn Bookshop, Ark Angel Christian Bookshop, Seventh Wave Gallery, Bude, or on the door. All proceeds will go to Connect Bude.
