St Petroc’s to close Key Stage 2 education in Bude

St Petroc’s School recently announced:

The Trustees of St Petroc’s have this afternoon announced plans to refocus the school as an Early Years and Key Stage 1 specialist in January 2021. Our Key Stage 2 element will formally close at this time. This restructure will be an exciting opportunity to develop and expand the outstanding Early Years and Pre-Prep provision that we currently offer, in order to meet the high demand for places in these age groups.

Current and future pupils in Years 3 – 6 will be able to continue their Independent education at Shebbear College, which is also part of the MIST group. A supervised bus service will be available for St Petroc’s children, enabling a smooth transition between the two schools.

This is a 19-mile (each way) cross-country commute.

The Board of Trustees, part of MIST (Methodist Independent Schools Trust) made something of a faux pas by announcing the change on Facebook at the same time that staff, pupils and their parents were informed.

Parents are incensed and understandably worried about the announcement which seems to have come out of the blue, as their comments on Facebook demonstrate. Announcing the change in the middle of the Covid-19 crisis has not helped.

Your thoughts, as ever, are welcome.
