The A39 was closed earlier, following a collision involving an elderly couple, near the Morwenstow turn off.
The collision occurred around 12.40 but the road was reopened by the time I travelled along it sometime around 3 pm, with police traffic control in operation.
Fire, police and ambulance services were called. One pump from Hartland, one pump from Bude and the rescue tender from Bodmin Community Fire Station, along with a whole time officer was immediately mobilised by Fire Control.
On arrival the officer in charge confirmed a single vehicle road traffic collision, the vehicle on its side with two persons trapped and Police, Ambulance and Air Ambulance in attendance. Crews used one reciprocating saw to release the casualties and made the vehicle safe.
The man, who was driving, was taken by ambulance to Barnstaple’s North Devon General Hospital, while the woman passenger was flown by air ambulance to Derriford. Her injuries are said to be life-threatening. Diversions were in operation for A39 traffic.
