The Department of Transport Ideas Fund is part of the Restoring Your Railway Fund. It is for proposals for projects to restore lost rail connections to communities, and is really the very early stages or checking the business case for a railway.
Three local groups (Connect Bude, Bude Coastal Communities Team and Bude Climate Partnership) are involved in a bid to this Fund, to enable an investigation into viability and feasibility of a new service – and the application has to be sponsored by an MP
Whether the application (now sponsored by Scott Mann, Geoffrey Cox, QC, and Mel Stride) to conduct a study into rail connectivity for our area is successful or not, it is important in highlighting connectivity and general transport links in our part of the the SW.
For example, people who need transport to Exeter for medical, educational, travel or work purposes currently really struggle if they have to rely on public transport. Whether we get rail links to Holsworthy or Bude or not, we definitely need something to take us forward. Links were better in the 1950s than now!
Scott Mann’s letter says:
Many thanks for contacting me regarding the application to Round 3 of the Department of Transport Restoring Your Railway Ideas Fund being made jointly by
Connect Bude, Bude Coastal Community Team and the Bude Climate Partnership.
I am aware that historically, communities in North Cornwall and north-west Devon have been among the most poorly served with regard to rail transport, and can see the significant social, economic and environmental benefits that would accrue from bringing connectivity to the National Rail Network closer to those communities.
As a founder member of Connect Bude, I also share the ambition for greater connectivity across the region to connect Okehampton to the mainline. This will do a
lot to support our long term goal of reconnecting Bude with the national rail network.
I understand that submission of an application to the Ideas Fund is contingent upon securing the sponsorship of Members of Parliament with constituencies through which a reinstated rail line would pass.
I write therefore to confirm my official sponsorship of your application and wish you every success with it.
Scott Mann MP
Member of Parliament for North Cornwall
Government Whip (Lord Commissioner of HM Treasury)
