Report by Binzy Reynolds:
Our June meeting at the Falcon Hotel was well attended. The Chairman opened the meeting at 19.30 prompt. A minute’s silence followed the usual verse from Binyon’s ‘For the Fallen.’
Both the membership secretary and the treasurer reported favourably, confirming our membership and finances are in good order. There was however, a lot of correspondence.
Our senior shipmate Arthur Marsh, recently travelled to Italy which was well reported in the local press. He intends to return again next year to pay tribute and remembrance.
This months ‘Tot’ was sponsored jointly by the Honourable Secretary and the Vice Chairman, both who have birthdays in June. July’s ‘Tot’ will be sponsored by shipmate Dave Mayor, purely because he is a generous bloke.
Four branches from our area will be sending delegates the Royal Naval Association’s AGM in Dublin.
We are recovering from our initial ‘Sunday Lunchie.’ It was well supported by well over twenty people having lunch together in the Falcon Hotel. The food was excellent and the usual raffle followed, generating funds for our branch.
Forthcoming events include a Psychic Evening with Alan and Jayne Bicker on Friday 6th July at the Falcon Hotel starting at 19.30. Tickets cost £10 each and are available from Jemima Rainbow in the Strand Shopping Centre, or from Chunky Philp on 07828 260949. There will also be a ‘Greet, Meet and Recruit’ presentation at Morrisons on Saturday 4th August. Our July and August meetings are ‘Banyan Evenings,’ so dig out that old pair of flip-flops and tatty beach shirt to qualify for the Chairman’s or Honourable Secretary’s seasonal, (worst dressed), awards. You could win three tons of beach sand or even a palm tree… Who knows?
‘Volunteers’ for next months raffle were nominated and other contributions are always welcome.
Following the Loyal Toast, the meeting closed at 19.58. The subsequent raffle and auction was productive for Branch funds.
There is now an opportunity to join your local branch of the RNA at discounted rates up to December 2018. If you have served in the Royal Navy, Royal Marines or any other branch of the services and wish to join us, we meet at the Falcon Hotel in Breakwater Road, at 19.00 on the first Thursday of each month. Those who have no naval service are eligible to join as associate members.
