Our local shops – your 2019 favourites

I haven’t had much time to think this through but I’d like to give a shout out to any local businesses that you think have performed over and above the call of duty during 2019, providing great customer service, amazing products, and consistently wonderful customer experience.

The prize – well, a bit of free publicity from you, the purchasers, as I share your comments on this page.

Plus, if anyone is truly outstanding, receiving numerous nominations, I will offer to donate my time to interview them for a free article in early 2020. In addition, I’m adding in a public service organisation category for any particular place providing a service/info to the public  – providing information, office space, expertise, community, etc.

We all know that times are tough in retail, and as more people shop at supermarkets and chains, or even online, it takes a special small retailer to survive the tough economic climate so let’s try to help businesses in Bude.

In the interests of equity and transparency, comments on social media won’t count so please send your nominations via comments to this page – they may be as brief or full as you wish. You may nominate  1 retailer or service provider per category (i.e., up to 10 organisations) or as few as you wish.

  1. Food outlets (cafes, restaurants, pubs).
  2. Food outlets (groceries).
  3. Clothing outlets.
  4. Hair and beauty.
  5. Furniture/furnishings/home decor.
  6. General stores.
  7. Speciality shops  – arts and crafts, books, pets, health, cakes, jewellery, etc
  8. Legal, property and financial
  9. Working from home retailer, e.g., cake makers, jewellery makers, crafters, etc
  10. Public service organisation.

Id like to Nominate Barkers of Bude in the category speciality shops because of their outstanding customer service. Those 2 ladies work so hard and go out of their way to care for your dogs. Our dog Finlay has some anxiety issues but he gets so excited when they come and get him and he always come home looking and smelling gorgeous and very relaxed! Due to our situation at home, having him picked up and dropped off is such a help and we are forever grateful to the wonderful ladies who run Barkers of Bude xxxx

I would like to nominate Coastal pets because they are very helpful. I find it hard to find the food that my guinea pigs like, so Coastal Pets order it in for Me every month!
They stock a good range of products, and is a great shop!

I’d like to nominate the ReFill shop in the category of food outlets, a fabulous enterprise of responsibly sourced products; the founders have worked tirelessly to bring this shop to Bude and it’s an amazing place to shop and chat. Everyone working there is so helpful and it deserves every success.

I’d like to nominate The Costume Rooms in the category Speciality Shops – it provides Bude and beyond with a unique shopping experience and an inspiring range of gifts, homeware, books and stationery. Michelle makes every effort to provide amazing products at competitive prices and goes above and beyond with wonderful customer service.
Aside from the retail aspect, Michelle is also researching 18th Century costume and fashion history, which happens daily in the on-site workshop; giving Bude locals and visitors a chance to come in and witness the creation of replica garments in real-time whilst having a browse.

I nominate The Costume Rooms. Totally unique shopping experience with unique gifts. Michelle is so helpful and very talented, take a look at the beautiful work she’s doing with Mantuas. No idea what they are? Ask Michelle she’s a fount of knowledge.
This shop is genuinely a Bude special.

I would like to nominate Bellinis Cafe in Queen St in the Food Outlets (cafe, restaurant and pubs) category. Not only do they serve in my opinion the best coffee in Bude but they have a fantastic range of locally sourced produce and gifts and Adam is always on the lookout for new things they can stock.
As a local person born and bred (my dad was born in Bellinis when it was a house over 80 years ago) I love shopping locally and supporting places like Bellinis.
