MP’s office organises community action day in Launceston

Scott Mann MP (centre) and Val Bugden-Cawsey (second from left) start the action day alongside the Clean Cornwall team at Biffa.

Braving the strong wind and rain, “teamwork” paid off on Wednesday, 14th February when Scott Mann’s Office organised a Community Action Day on The Ridgegrove Estate in Launceston.

Queen Elizabeth Road and the steps leading down to the bottom of the estate were the focus of the work, where a significant area of overgrown brambles were removed.

At the request of town councillor Val Bugden-Cawsey, the council’s ground staff used heavy-duty equipment to remove a large area of brambles before the rubbish could be collected. The team will return in the near-future to spray the area to prevent brambles growing back.

As soon as the brambles were cut down, Scott Mann, his office staff, volunteers and the Clean Cornwall team from Biffa cleared the rubbish which had been hiding in the undergrowth for some time. Amongst the rubbish was a discarded printer, two children’s scooters, two sets of roller skates and a hibernating hedgehog which was rescued and re-housed by one of the hard-working Biffa operatives.

Steps and paths were cleared of rubbish and weeds with over 30 bags of rubbish being collected. Four dump bags were also filled with garden waste, and equipment was supplied by Cormac’s new Community Tool Trailer which is filled with gloves, garden tools, wheelbarrows and dumpy bags.

Scott Mann MP said:

“My office and I have completed a number of these events around North Cornwall which are making a real difference to local communities.

“We even had children coming to help to tidy and clean their estate, and they seem to be very much more aware of the environment than we were when we were their age.”

“My thanks go to the volunteers who came out despite the weather, as well as Biffa, Clean Cornwall and Cormac. In addition, a heartfelt thanks go to Mr and Mrs Sanders who supplied everyone with hot drinks and homemade biscuits, buns and snacks throughout the day.”
