It’s that time of year – we get some sunshine and moorland areas set alight. This weekend, it was the turn of Watern Tor where 10km square was damaged in the blaze yesterday.
The Devon fire service received numerous calls to a fire on the moors. Two appliances, one 4×4 vehicle and a water foam carrier were mobilised. Before the crews arrived the could see the fire and asked for two additional appliances and two additional 4×4 pumping appliances. The specialist 4×4 from the urban search and rescue team was also mobilised.
Shortly after booking in attendance the crews made pumps 10. Six additional appliances were mobilised along with an incident command vehicle. Due to the remote location, additional 4×4 was also sent.Crews got to work using beaters and creating fire breaks. On scene crews then made pumps 15 for additional manpower and an additional five pumps were mobilised and a welfare unit to provide support. The crews confirmed that the fire front was 2km x 3km and fire on all four fronts.
Crews involved included: Okehampton, Hatherleigh, North Tawton, Chagford, Tavistock, Chulmleigh, Moretonhampstead, Launceston, Middlemoor, Honiton, Crediton, Danes Castle, Bovey Tracey, Yelverton, Torrington, Holsworthy, Ivybridge, Buckfastleigh, Exmouth, Witheridge, Newton Abbot and Plymstock.
The fire is now extinguished and hotspots checked.
