Meet Elite West Holidays, our new sponsor

A warm welcome to our latest sponsor, Elite West Holidays, who offer a unique service for owners of holiday homes in and around Bude. They have the ultimate portfolio of wonderful luxe-touch holiday accommodation in the area, so visitors can escape the hustle and bustle, while owners can relax knowing that every need is taken care of by their professional but friendly management team. It’s not easy work, but the company, run for over 10 years by owners Nick and Ruth Compton, provides a full management experience for high-quality, stylishly decorated holiday accommodation. The aim of the company is to provide high-grade rental options for visitors to enjoy, whatever the weather, with fabulous holiday homes equipped with wifi, Sky, and Internet-ready TV for visitors to chill after a day at one of our beautiful Bude beaches.

Elite West is not just a lettings agency but provides an unparalleled whole management package for clients, from bookings to housekeeping, maintenance and welcome packs.

The company enthuses about putting money into the local economy through their management system. They use local tradespeople and cleaners to provide locals with work and they encourage holiday home owners to buy goods and furniture from local businesses like Woolacotts, Gilbert & Vanstone, and Congdons to keep money in Bude to boost the local economy. Their welcome packs also contain largely Cornish products. They recommend wonderful places for people to visit or to eat while mediating between the varying demands of owners, buyers and the services of people who provide cleaning services, etc.

Their commission for full lettings management is lower than most companies charge for lettings (taking bookings) so at 20%, they are well worth checking out if you rent out a quality property. If required, they will even provide a concierge service organising an itinerary of events for visitors, such as golf, surfing, horse-riding and bike hire. Ask for details.

Inspired to a personal lifestyle change by a stay at Northcote Manor in South Molton, the couple moved down to Bude for their children and have never regretted their decision, as they are now well established in the community. As Nick, a member of the Bencoolen Wreckers says, Bude is a friendly community with wonderful beaches, the coastal path and the sea pool to enjoy. What not to like?

Nick started his career as a busy barristers’ clerk at a London Inn of Court, providing management experience which stood the couple in good stead for hospitality work. Their role includes liaising with visitors, owners, and cleaning/maintenance staff while ensuring very high standards are kept to keep both visitors and owners happy. They are the people called out if a problem arises, a great relief for their clients.

The couple edged SW with an initial move to Bristol but finally started their new lifestyle in 1988 with the purchase of Crackington Manor, which was then a traditional hotel. It was a struggle to make it pay enough to live and cover the bank loan, so they decided to take advantage of the self-catering trend converting it to a stylish unit for up to 24 people. The idea worked well as large groups started to visit. Meanwhile, Nick was also desktop publishing, and with 4 children, the couple were kept very busy.

However, the boom-bust years of the 1980s/90s were difficult economic times, with high-interest rates on loans and very nervous banks. As the couple were building their business, the bank effectively pulled the plug, commonplace at that time. They sold up and downsized, as Nick tried his hand (successfully) at all sorts of roles – carpentry, gardening, taxi driving, desktop publishing, and maintenance work, while Ruth worked for a local solicitor. Eventually, Nick’s portfolio of jobs and skills led to their entry to full-time property management. Both have worked in all aspects of the business, including the cleaning and laundry, so they know it inside out and can provide appropriately personalised service.

Nick says he enjoys his work, though tourism is growing harder due to the commercial climate. Despite the detrimental impact of providers like Airbnb, and the rise of the short-break, plus all the ongoing political uncertainty of the last few years, Elite West remains a highly successful business because of its unique selling point: they do everything for their clients, leaving owners with nothing to worry about when renting out their properties, while visitors feel cherished and cared for at their chosen accommodation.

Meanwhile, Bude & Beyond is feeling cherished, too. Thanks to Elite West for their support of this community website.
