Local legend, Alfie, helps save family caught in rip

From Bude Surf life Saving Club:

This week, a 12 year old Bude Surf Life Saving Club member, Alfie Turner, assisted with a rescue of a family floating out in the rip at Sandymouth.

Alfie spotted they were in difficultly and paddled over to them, being first on scene. He signalled for lifeguard assistance and stayed with the family until the lifeguards got to them.

While the lifeguards rescued the other family members, Alfie stayed with the father who was swimming, until the lifeguard returned to take him back to shore. All the time the rip was pulling them out around the back of long rock and out of sight of the main beach.

The BSLC said:

As a club we are super proud of Alfie, not only with the way he handled the situation but with how he spotted the family in difficulty and instantly reacted. Alfie is 12 years old and how he responded to the situation is fundamentally what our club is all about; his training through Nippers was put into action and we have no doubt he will continue to grow both as a valued club member and a highly competent lifeguard.

Well done, Alfie. you are indeed a local legend.
