This shows one of the long-armed diggers, mounted on a barge, digging the trench out to sea to accommodate the pipeline. Explosives were used to break up the rock in order to facilitate trench digging.

The pipeline, now assembled and joins, is fed through large supports – each having a wheeled runner at the top – across Summerleaze beach. It was then fed into a trench laid under the beach, through the breakwater and into another trench leading out to sea.
