Recreation Ground 1926

Both the tennis courts and the bowling green are being well used in this picture from 1926, not long after the recreation grounds were established. In the background both the Hartland Hotel and Westcliff flats have not yet been extended into the buildings they are today.

The cinema in Burn View 1921

The original Bude cinema, at the end of Burn View, built in 1920 and replaced by the new Picture House on Summerleaze Down in 1935. The advertised film is The Kid, starring Charlie Chaplin, which was released in 1921.

Morwenna Terrace & Bude Meat Supplies 1891

Shown in 1891, after the Great Blizzard, Morwenna Terrace had recently been completed. On the end is a butcher’s shop, a use these premises were to maintain for nearly 125 years until, as Bude Meat Supply, that trade ended.
