Jon Price of Handmade Framing, Kilkhampton, has just qualified as Cornwall’s only Fine Art Trade Guild ‘Guild Certified Framer’.
Having studied for the qualification for the last 2 years and winning a national Guild scholarship in 2017, Jon travelled to Surrey to sit t3-hour exam last week. Jon was assessed on 3 pre-framed pieces: a textile, a stretched and framed canvas and a piece of paper-based art framed with conservation materials and techniques. All of these pieces had to be framed to Fine Art Trade Guild Standards. Jon then had to sit a written paper and undergo a rigorous question and answer session with Guild examiner Ian Dixon GCF (APFA) adv.
Despite his nerves, Jon passed with flying colours, scoring 97% on his written paper and the overall mark of ‘pass with credit’ the equivalent to a merit.
‘I’m really pleased to have passed. People don’t realise that in most cases their artwork and other important items are being damaged by the way they are framed. The Guild is working to educate people as to the benefits of good framing. I’m proud to be part of that and to be the only Guild Certified Framer in Cornwall.” Commented Jon.
The Fine Art Trade Guild is the trade association for the art and framing industry. It sets globally recognised standards and guidelines for the picture framing industry and art print trade. The Guild Certified Framer programme is internationally recognised as the qualification for the framing industry. Qualified GCF’s are now framing in 25 countries worldwide. Now for the first time, this includes Cornwall.
