It’s Honours time again …

Happy New Year!

We all have different views on the Honours system, so just had a quick trawl through the Honours list to find any Cornish links.

There may well be others but these are immediate ones (no links to Bude this year, I’m afraid). If I’ve missed anyone out, apologies – please let me know and I’ll amend:

  • Visit Cornwall head Malcolm Bell has received an MBE for services to tourism in south-west England in recognition for his work during the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • Pawlet Brookes – Founder and Artistic Director, Serendipity Arts UK Ltd. For services to the Arts –  also receives the MBE.
  • Barbara Rounsevell (MBE) – For services to the community in Cornwall.
  • Joanne Ruxton (MBE) – Founder, Ocean Generation. For services to Marine Conservation, Newquay.
  • Martin Ward (MBE) – Lifeguard Supervisor, for Services to RNLI & Charity, St Agnes, Cornwall.

Congratulations to them all.

The honours system recognises people who have:

  • made achievements in public life
  • committed themselves to serving and helping Britain

They’ll usually have made life better for other people or be outstanding at what they do. 65% of the recipients are people who have undertaken outstanding work in their communities either in a voluntary or paid capacity.

Of course, we all know people who make a huge difference to the lives of others and are outstanding in what they do – so here’s to those not honoured today but who still do amazing work without (so far) any public accolade.
