2020 is shaping up to be a fantastic fun-filled year with many events across the town being held and organised by The Town Council (TC), Local Community Groups (CG) and Bude Tourist Information (BTI).
April 4th – Grand Opening of the New Bencoolen Play Park. (TC) To celebrate this amazing new space we are inviting local residents to come along and join in with the Grand Opening Celebrations. Mayor Cllr Bob Willingham, will officially be opening the new play park on Saturday 4th April at 11 am-1 pm. Please join in the fun and mark this special occasion
April 18th – Proclamation Ceremony (TC) The Gorsedh Kernow’s Esedhvos Festival is proceeded by a Proclamation Ceremony, to start the celebrations in motion for the 91st Esedhvos festival. There will be a procession and proclamation in the Triangle on Saturday 18th April.
April 30th – Annual Town Meeting (TC) Bude-Stratton Annual Town Meeting is to be held on 30th April 2020, in the Ivor Potter Hall at The Parkhouse Centre at 7 pm.
Easter Holidays– “Captaining the Ceres” Virtual Reality Game (TC) Using a VR headset and a ship’s wheel, steer the ketch the ‘Ceres’ into the tricky port of Bude. There will be a fully immersive display within the heritage centre allowing visitors to get a sense of what it would have been like to be on deck and provide information about Bude’s history as a port.
8th May – VE Day Celebrations (TC) Marking 75 years since Allied Victory in Europe in 1945. To celebrate, the UK government moved the May Day Bank Holiday to Friday 8th May. Various events are due to take place across the country, here at Bude-Stratton Town Council we are marking this occasion with “Garden Party” inviting the local community to join together on The Castle Grounds, from 12-2 pm. Come along with a picnic, and celebrate 75 years of Victory.
16th May – Ancient Land beneath your feet (TC) A brand new exhibition being launched at The Castle, celebrating the land beneath your feet. Come and see the exciting artefacts and stories of medieval buildings and settlements in Bude and the surrounding area.
7th June – Bude Earth Festival (TC) A fantastic day celebrating our beautiful planet! Following on from the success of last year, the day will offer an assortment of eco-friendly workshops and talks focused on helping people to live more sustainably – supported by leading names in the environmental sector, but also those more locally-known environmental groups, too. Join us for what is sure to be a fun and informative day.
19th-20th June – TSUNAMI Ocean Trail Races (CG) We welcome Tsunami races to Bude for a weekend of pure trail races. From 7 miles to 75 miles covering Westward Ho! to Bude and everything in between.
5th July & 2nd August – Brass on the Grass (TC) Join us for an afternoon of music at the bandstand in The Castle grounds. As well-loved local bands perform for the community and visitors alike, free to attend.
11th July – Christian Family Fun Day (CG) Located on The Castle grounds, Christians Together in Bude & Stratton brings the family fun day back for another action-packed year. A day for the community to come together for a fun family day out.
18th July – Battle of Stamford Hill Commemoration (TC) The struggle between King and Parliament during the 17th century Civil War, saw the Battle of Stamford Hill take place on 16 May 1643. Commemoration of this historic event will take place again in July on The Castle lawns. This fantastic event sees a living history camp, live canons and some rather exciting duels. Fun for all the family and forms part of Bude-Stratton Heritage Weekend.
19th July – Heritage Day (TC) One of Bude’s most anticipated events, Bude-Stratton Heritage Festival, will be held this year on Sunday 19th July. The day is geared towards providing a fun and free day out for the community, to celebrate our town and local heritage. We are excited to welcome back “The Countrymen” to this year’s event.
5th August – Miracle Theatre on the lawn (TC) This year Miracle Theatre return with a performance of King Lear! Held on The Castle grounds this is sure to be an exciting performance. Tickets and more information will be released soon.
15th August – Bude Carnival (CG) One of Bude’s favourite events! Bude Carnival will return to the town for another fun day of family activities, floats, costumes and competitions. Be sure to get your favourite spot for the procession.
22nd August – Wreckers Morris Dancers (CG) Local Morris Dancers put on a performance around The Bude Light.
23rd August – Food Festival (CG) A day to celebrate everything food. Bude Food Festival combines Artisan farmers market with street food at The Castle Lawns.
29th-31st August – RNLI Weekend (CG) One of the best weekends in Bude is without a doubt the RNLI lifeboat weekend, this 3-day event is set to return this year organised by the RNLI, crew and volunteers, the weekend showcases the fantastic work carried out by the RNLI and raises all-important funds.
1st-4th September – Bude Jazz Festival (CG) This 4-day music event will be held at various sites across the town including The Ivor Potter Hall. A full list of events can be found here: www.jazzfestivalbude.co.uk
2nd-6th September – Gorsedh (TC) The highlight of the Bude-Stratton 2020 Calendar is the Gorsedh Kernow’s Esedhvos Festival being hosted in Bude-Stratton. The Town Council is honoured to be hosting this year’s event which aims to promote and celebrate Cornwall’s distinctive cultural identity and Celtic heritage. The 4-day event consists of an exhibition at The Castle, Processions, Ceremony, Concerts and Workshops. A full programme of events will be published soon, which includes the return of Bude’s very own “Furry Dance”
22nd-25th October – Bude Literary Festival (TC) A brand new addition to Bude’s fantastic calendar of events this year “Bude Literary Festival” a celebration of all things literature, from writing workshops to guest authors, songwriting workshops and speakers this event will offer something for everyone, not to be missed.
6th December – Bude Christmas Fayre (TC) To round off 2020, the fabulous Bude Christmas Fayre returns, a much-anticipated family fun event held across the Parkhouse Centre and The Castle. With Christmas stalls aplenty and events for the whole family, you will be left feeling full of festive delights.
12th – 13th December – Bude Christmas Markets (BTI) After the success of last year’s debut Christmas Markets, Bude Tourist Information is putting together a two day Christmas Market event showcasing the work of local artists, crafters and artisans held at the Beach Huts at Crooklets Beach, Bude. 11 am- 4 pm both days.
