Face coverings become compulsory in shops and on public transport

The Prime Minister earlier led a press conference about the new Omicron variant.

He said the new variant spreads very rapidly and that includes among the double vaccinated. Scientists are learning more about how the variant works.

Following the press conference, a statement from 10 Downing Street said: “Face coverings will be made compulsory in shops and on public transport from next week. All hospitality settings will be exempt.”

While it is not clear how well the vaccine will protect people, it is believed that the effects of Covid will be less severe in vaccinated individuals, so vaccination was also urged.
