The new Atlantic Racquet Centre based on the periphery of Caddsdown industrial estate in Bideford is now in full swing with the outdoor and indoor courts being used heavily by many budding future Wimbledon hopefuls.
Torridge District Council has recently supported the development of this project through funding from its New Homes Bonus grant scheme. £26,800 was provided last year towards the installation of indoor court lighting with a further £30,000 awarded more recently to support the tennis hall ancillary works.
Whilst still in development the club has already grown from strength to strength now having over 500 Members, and over 300 on the coaching programme
David Vinall Management Committee Chairman and Trustee said:
“We are extremely grateful for the support from Torridge Council and several other organisations that has enabled us to achieve what we have so far. As a community charity we are fully committed to completing these facilities ASAP for the benefit of everyone in the community. In addition to the general public being able to book indoor and outdoor courts on a pay & play basis the facilities are already utilised by a large number of local schools, disability groups, and other local organisations.
Last week we were able to stage a Tournament, which attracted over 330 entrants from all over the country as well as local children and adults. Some of the competitors are pictured in the photo of the cheque presentation from TDC.”
Councillor Phil Pennington Lead Member for Community, Culture & Leisure said:
“Torridge District Council is proud to have been able to support such a magnificent facility, which will be of benefit to the residents and visitors to Torridge for generations to come. The site will house a wide array of state of the art facilities allowing people to undertake a wide range of recreational activities. The growth in membership and recent events has seen the club go from strength to strength and we wish them every success in their future plans”
