Last month, students from Budehaven’s Year 10 GCSE Drama classes travelled to the Theatre Royal, Plymouth to see Matilda the Musical.
Matilda The Musical premiered at the RSC’s The Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in November 2010, playing to sold-out audiences before transferring to London’s West End. In October 2011, it opened at the Cambridge Theatre and began touring the UK and Ireland in March 2018.
On the 23rd of January, we all piled onto the coach, excited for the performance. When we
arrived, we were amazed by how well the stage was decorated, and the details included in the set. The stage was covered with thousands of letter tiles, all featuring references to the book by Roald Dahl. Both students and the teachers found the show funny, but also very emotional. One minute everyone was sobbing, the next they were hysterical with laughter!
The children featured in the performance were breathtakingly good, and the adults brilliant. Miss Trunchbull (played by Elliot Harper) was both terrifying and hilarious, portraying her perfectly, and was probably my personal favourite.
The Year 10 students who went on the trip would like to thank the teachers for putting up with us on the coach (as you can imagine, having 40+ drama students on a coach is definitely interesting!) and making the trip so memorable.
The show was (as expected) brilliant, and the songs featured were very entertaining.
