A report on the appearance by 11 year old chess wonder, Theo Slade, last week, who challenged all comers to chess:
” On Sunday afternoon 9th September, Theo Slade 11, from Marhamchurch, the current West of England and Cornish under 12 chess champion, took on all comers in the Triangle in Bude to publicise the start of a new chess club in Bude. Theo played 20 games and at one point was playing 6 at the same time. He ended up winning 18, drawing one, and only lost once. Bude chess will be catering for all standards of chess player from complete beginners to experienced players and will be meeting on Thursday evenings at The New Life Centre on The Strand in Bude. A beginners course will start on 20th September for 12 weeks and a six round tournament for people who can already play starts fortnightly on the 27th September. Bude chess is open to anyone who can play or who wants to learn this fascinating game. There is full disabled access at the venue. The club is being run by husband and wife team John and Chris Constable who have both played, coached, provided equipment and bookstalls, and arbited at chess congresses throughout the country, particularly in the South West.
