Convictions after 2017 Liskeard toddler, Eve’s, death

A mother whose 22-month-old daughter died after being beaten and poisoned was found not guilty of murder in Truro Crown Court yesterday. Eve Leatherland died in Liskeard, Cornwall, with multiple fractures and a fatal dose of codeine in her system in October 2017. Abigail Leatherland, 26, was convicted of causing or allowing her daughter’s death.

Her former partner of a few months, Thomas Curd, was convicted of murder. The jury was told how the toddler, Eve, suffered a fractured skull and ribs, and a lacerated liver. To hide her pain, codeine was administered, but eventually, she was overdosed.  Sentencing takes place today.

The NSPCC commented:

“This is an appalling case in which a defenceless toddler was forced to endure the unspeakable actions of a man who should have been keeping her safe.

A young life has been cut tragically short as a result of that violence and her own mother’s inaction highlights Eve’s complete lack of protection from this horrific abuse.

Looking out for the welfare of babies and young children is something we all have a duty to undertake. And any adult with concerns for a child’s welfare can contact the NSPCC Helpline on 0808 800 5000.”
