From Bude Coastguard Facebook page:
Bude Coastguard Rescue Team were paged at 18:48 on Friday to a report of a possible surfer in difficulties off Wrangle Point just north of Crooklets beach.
Bude Lifeboat and Rescue Watercraft were also tasked to locate the surfer and were guided in the approximate direction by the first informant. Bude Coastguard Team positioned themselves on the clifftop at Maer High to perform a binocular search of the area. With good light and visibility, a clear view of the area gave a high probability of detection.
An unidentified speck was spotted approximately one and a half miles offshore so the team guided the Lifeboat to its position. However, it quickly became apparent that this was a small fishing boat heading back to harbour.
After a thorough search of the area from both sea and land, nothing was found so it was assumed that the incident was a well-meant false alarm. The team and the lifeboat were duly stood down.
If you see anything similar, please do as this first informant did by calling 999 and asking for the Coastguard. It is much better to err on the side of caution and the rescue teams are always more than happy to respond.
