Check out Bude and Holsworthy Roller Skating Discos

By Helen Shingler:

My two granddaughters, Akasha aged 10 and Layla aged 4, live outside the UK but come over to us for Christmas.  I try to pack in as many fun things to do as possible when they are here and during Christmas 2017 took them along to one of the Roller Skating discos at Holsworthy organised by Sharon Jenkins and her crew.

My grandchildren now live in Egypt so roller skating is not something well known and they do spend a lot of time ‘outside’ in the sun all year.  So, imagine my delight when both girls had never forgotten their visit to the Holsworthy roller skating disco that Christmas and top of their Xmas present list last year was a pair of In-line roller skates for Akasha (and obviously all the safety gear) and a pair of safety roller skates for Layla, both of which we were very happy to buy for them.

I remember the roller skates I had at Akasha’s age, the metal and leather ones you slipped on over your shoes!  They were still a fun thing to go out and play with and decades later they still are, although rather more sophisticated than the ones I had!  Enthusiastic people like Sharon and the others who help to run the roller discos and other similar clubs and groups are in my mind the ‘salt of the earth’ types as my parents would say. They are mostly unsung heroes who run these clubs for no reward of their own, simply the enjoyment of those taking part and for the benefit of the community.

Bude and Holsworthy Roller skaters have a facebook page if you want further details but, generally, there is a Roller Disco every Saturday from 1:45 PM until 3:45 PM at Holsworthy Leisure Centre. Why not pop along and join in the fun one Saturday? There’s speed skating, skate games and disco classics with a few cheesy dance tunes thrown in for good measure as well as the latest hits.   It’s perfect for a friendly skate catering for everybody from the youngest toddler to the coolest grandparent and all ages in between.  Also held on Tuesday from 5 pm until 6 pm at Budehaven Sports Hall with disco and skills session.

Roller skates and in-line skates available to hire at both centres. Also all protective equipment available to borrow. Learn from experienced skaters with tuition available to help you learn the basics right through to skate park and aggressive skating techniques.  Birthday party sessions are available upon request with lights, music and tuition to get everybody up and rolling!

You can get fit, have fun and make new friends or just relive your youth!  They will give you a warm welcome and may even inspire you, like my two granddaughters, to buy your own skates and keep rolling………..
