Summerleaze Beach will be patrolled by volunteer lifeguards this October, so first of all, we need to give many thanks to them for their time and hard work. A personal thanks from me. Their commitment has extended my daughter’s surf lesson season by 4 weeks and I’m sure others will also be very grateful. This is the first time lifeguard cover has been extended on this beach by RNLI and Bude Surf Lifesaving Club.

Lifesavers will be on patrol every weekend in October and throughout the half term week of October 29 to November 2, finishing for the 2012 season on Sunday 4 November. Three lifeguards will be on duty each day, including volunteers from the RNLI and Bude Surf Lifesaving Club.

Phil Hill, RNLI Lifeguard Manager for the area, says it’ll be a good asset for the town to have lifeguard cover during what can be a busy month:

We’re delighted to be able to provide lifeguard cover on Summerleaze beach during October and the half term week. Widemouth beach already has extended season cover and it was such a success last year we were very keen to try and expand on it. Thanks to the generosity of the RNLI and surf club lifeguards who will be volunteering their time, this is now possible.

’Our special thanks must go to the Bude Surf Life Saving Club members who will be volunteering alongside RNLI lifeguards to provide safety cover on the beach. We already work very closely with the club throughout the summer and hope this partnership will be beneficial for both organisations in helping to forge a strong relationship for the future.’

Adrian Parsons at Bude Surf Lifesaving Club said: ‘This kind of cooperation will be beneficial to all beach users and shows the value of the RNLI and SLSGB working together. We both have the same ideals and views on beach and sea safety and therefore compliment each other well.’

Phil added: ‘The lifeguard team felt it would be beneficial for the local community to provide safety patrols on a town beach in October, adding more choice for locals and visitors who want to visit a beach with lifeguard cover. The local lifeguards are very passionate about safety within their community and hope the people of Bude will find this extra voluntary lifeguard cover to be a valuable addition to the town in what can be a very busy time.’

Lifeguards will be Summerleaze beach on: Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 October, Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 October, Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 October, Saturday 27 October and Sunday 28 October, Monday 29 October – Friday 2 November and Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 November.

* I’m proud to support these wonderful charities given all they do for Bude and the surrounding coastal areas. I have RNLI membership, and husband and daughter did the sponsored Christmas Dip last year. Why not consider the same?
