Bude’s 2 Minute Foundation wins lottery funding for beach education

The internationally recognised Bude-based charity, The 2 Minute Foundation, has won National Lottery funding to set-up, plan and develop a new beach education programme. The 2 Minute Beach Eco-School will deliver lessons in conservation for children throughout the 2020/2021 school year.

The 2 Minute Foundation is a registered charity that is devoted to cleaning up the planet, 2 minutes at a time. CEO Martin Dorey said, “We believe that simple, achievable acts can add up to make a great difference.”

“The National Lottery Coronavirus Community Support Fund especially liked our proposal as it focused on getting people back outside in nature and working on community issues together, rather than other applications that were more online focused,” Martin continued, “Our aims are to see a world without plastic litter and pollution, to inspire and enable people to change the way they interact with outdoor spaces, and education is the key! What better way to teach the next generation than by setting up our own beach school?”

The charity will also use the grant, which is part of the Governments £750m support package to charities, to build their ever-growing network of ‘Guardian Angels’, 2 Minute Foundation volunteers, by recruiting and training more volunteers in the Dorset area to support the Clean Up Stations and undertake outreach community activities. The 2 Minute Foundation have Stations in the U.K, Ireland, Wales and Scotland, and also internationally in Portugal and Greece.

Famous for its global #2minutebeachclean campaign, and other impactful and planet positive campaigns, launched on both social media and using direct action, the charity aims to empower, educate, inspire and enable individuals, groups and businesses to make simple changes or take part in simple actions that will contribute to the planet’s wellbeing, as well as their own. The charity operates a network of almost 900 ‘beach cleaning and litter picking stations’ around the UK and Ireland and works with the likes of Keep Britain Tidy, Keep Wales Tidy, Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful and Keep Scotland Beautiful as well as the Canal and River Trust, National Trust and Dartmoor National Park.
