Budehaven students treated to pro jazz

What a treat Budehaven music students had when touring Jazz Quintet, The Alex Hitchcock Quintet, stopped by on route to performing at St Ives Jazz Club.

Students from GCSE and A Level Music classes, as well as the school’s very own Jazz Band members, attended a 2-hour performance and workshop from the ensemble, which resulted in a mass performance of over 40 students and staff performing a stunning version of Tenor Madness by legend saxophonist, Sonny Rollins.

The Quintet is made up of pianist Will Barry, bassist Joe Downard, drummer Jay Davis and trumpeter James Copus. Saxophonist, Alex Hitchcock, has been tipped in the jazz media for great things, and marked out as “an incredible young lion of the tenor sax”.

The session began with an inspirational and captivating concert from the group which then later split into break out groups to work in instrument-specific sections.

Budehaven students enjoyed playing alongside the members of the quintet as well as being coached by the professional musicians in a rhythm and improvisation workshop. This resulted in a truly remarkable performance from everybody in which every single student could perform and even take a solo.

The school would certainly recommend catching these guys at a concert on their tour; you will not be disappointed. They are welcome back at Budehaven anytime.
