Bude Sea Pool Events

image001Message from those lovely folks at Bude Sea Pool. If you’re a member you’ll have this anyway, and if not, why not?

We’re delighted to confirm that the structural works were completed in time for the Pool to be re-filled for the Easter holidays. T’was a shame the weather was so nippy, but several brave souls still seized the opportunity to get their heads wet in the freshly-dredged Pool. Many more visited the Pool for a look-see to admire the full-width walkway over the new watergate. The gate itself is still ‘bedding in’ as its timbers swell; we’ll be keeping an eye on the water flow over the coming weeks.

We reduced the lifeguard cover over Easter to a skeleton crew in view of the cold weather. FoBSP staff will be lifeguarding the Pool during the summer holidays – let’s hope it’s a bit warmer!

The staff at the Falcon Hotel invite you to The Coachman’s Bar on Saturday 13th April for their ‘All Day Coffee Morning’ to raise funds for the Sea Pool. Between 10am and 4pm the Falcon’s barista-trained staff will serve coffee free of charge but will ask for donations to the Sea Pool. Cakes (hurrah!) will also be available so bring some pennies to splash out on your favourite indulgence.

The event is sponsored by Coffee West Limited who will be providing Fat Roc 100% pure Arabica bourbon coffee which is fairtrade, organic and part of the rainforest alliance. So brighten up your Saturday by dropping in at the Coachman’s – next to the canal, just a short stroll away from the Sea Pool itself.

Our ‘Evening with David Brabham’ on Wednesday 15th May will feature an exciting auction of unique items of motorsports memorabilia, including signed racing kit from David’s career in the American Le Mans series. David, son of Sir Jack Brabham, will be at the Falcon Hotel in Bude where he will give an insight into the top levels of the international motor racing scene. Tickets are £30 (discounted to £28 for FoBSP members) and include dinner, interviews with David, and the auction where you’ll be able to bid on autographed items like racing gloves and boots; signed photo of Mika Hakkinen; Allan McNish Audi goodies; signed Jenson Button book; model F1 cars; motorsports videos and DVDs and more.

Tickets are strictly limited and prebook only: available from the Falcon Hotel or Seventh Wave Gallery, or contact events@budeseapool.org

We aim to have a FoBSP presence at many events in Bude during the summer season, spreading the word about the Sea Pool, asking for donations and attracting new members. Could you spare a couple of hours to help? These events are always very entertaining and it’s a great way to meet other people who share your passion for the Pool. If you’d be able to join the FoBSP team for a couple of hours (normally on a weekend but not always), please get in touch!

The FoBSP team will be fund-raising at the Wedding Fair on 21st April at the Falcon Hotel. Drop by to browse the bridal displays, renew your membership and learn more about what FoBSP does between 10am and 4pm.

We have been given a brand new Halstead gas boiler which is being sold for Sea Pool funds. This is not suitable for domestic purposes but is ideal for outbuildings, a greenhouse, outhouse, garage etc. It’s a lightweight ‘Hero’ model, worth around £400. Any offers? Contact admin@budeseapool.org

Last year we made an application to the Truemark Trust for a grant, and we were bowled over to receive a cheque for £2000 this month. That’s a great help towards the cost of the watergate and this year’s structural repair bill (around £25,0000), and we really appreciate the support of the Trust.

We also have another grant application pending. We were nominated by Steve at Courtenay Insurance for the Aviva Community Fund, and will find out in a couple of weeks if our application was successful. Either way, we’re indebted to Steve for putting us forward as the chosen charity for his brokerage. We’ll let you know whether a celebration is in order…

The annual FoBSP handbook will be distributed to all members at the end of the month. As well as news and background information about the Sea Pool and our activities, it also contains details of our 2013 business sponsors. Our commercial sponsors pay for a substantial chunk of the Pool’s running costs, so please support them in return.

The handbook also includes details of FoBSP member discounts, worth hundreds of pounds. So check the adverts and listings carefully, and you could claim your discount on surf kit, holiday accommodation, double glazing, meals and drinks, MoTs, workwear, accounts advice, wetsuits, gardening kit, magazines and more. Make a note of your member number (it’ll be on the address label) as you may need to quote this to claim your discount

The Bude Motor Club host their annual Classic Motor Show on Sunday 28th April, and this year they have generously nominated the Sea Pool as their chosen charity. So roll along to the Rugby Club; entry is free, and you’ll find FoBSP volunteers taking donations and raising funds among the array of awesome classic cars.

…absolutely everyone who continues to support the Sea Pool by fund-raising, raising awareness and contributing to our efforts. A special round of applause this month goes to Bude Infants School, Bude Youth Theatre, Jacobstow Parish Council, the Plough Arts Centre in Torrington and the Preston Gate pub in Poughill. There are many more unsung heroes who’ve helped out, chipped in, and gone the extra mile to keep the Sea Pool in the swim. Your efforts are massively appreciated – not just by the FoBSP team, but by the thousands of people who enjoy swimming in the safety of the Pool every year.
