Bude goes zero waste!

Love Bude, hate waste? While supermarkets play lip service to environmental issues, a group of volunteers has tackled the issue head-on with an initiative to buy your shopping locally – without single-use packaging.

Everything from shampoo and smellies, to a delicious array of kitchen cupboard staples will soon be available via a community interest project in The Strand Shopping Arcade –Bude’s very own ReFILL Shop.

The range of fill-your-own package-free options will expand with customer demand, but will initially include competitively priced essentials and family favourites, such as pasta, herbs and spices, cereals and grains, nuts, seeds and dried fruit, pulses, oils and vinegar, toiletries, all types of household cleaning products and even treats like chocolate peanuts! Customers will be able to buy as much or a little as needed, so less waste and less cost too.

To ensure everyone has access to the initiative, the shop will be run as a social enterprise so products will be affordable. 100% of any profit will be donated back to Bude community groups.

But it can’t happen without your help. Getting the shop off the ground is expected to cost at least £11,000. This includes stock, hygiene sealed containers and other commercial equipment. On the wish list is a nut butter/ nut milk machine for make-your-own nut butter and plant milk. The shop will be staffed by volunteers initially, with the aim of providing living wage employment for local people once up and running.

On 1 December, ReFILL Shop volunteers launched a crowdfunded appeal to raise the financial resources needed to make the shop a reality. Aiming to open in February/ March 2019, they have just six weeks to raise the money needed.

Please help make Bude’s very own ReFILL Shop happen by donating to the crowdfunder:

Those making donations over £5 to the Crowdfunder will receive a thank you gesture – roll of honour, generous discounts on future purchases, dedication on a hopper, or even cutting the ribbon at the official opening. These offers are limited though so get in quick!

If you’d like to get involved please get in touch.  Oh – and please tell all your friends!

About the zero waste initiative

The issue of how to tackle the harm caused by single-use plastics is hugely important. While the UK is on track to meet recycling targets of 50% by 2020, options for single-use plastic recycling are limited. Around 5 Million tonnes, of plastic packaging waste is generated by UK households each year – much of which ends up in landfill.  Minimising the waste we produce via reuse schemes will help stem the tide of rubbish poisoning our oceans and washing up on our beaches.

About ReFILL Shop

ReFILL Shop is a social enterprise (not-for-profit) scheme set up by volunteers from Bude and the surrounding villages. Concerned with the amount of plastic washing up on local beaches and frustrated by lack of action in their area, the group formed with the aim of making reducing single-use packaging waste locally an option for all.

ReFILL Shop will offer the community:

* Affordable package-free household staples (and a few treats!)

* Cleaner beaches – less packaging in our oceans – cleaner streets

* 100% of profits to local community projects

* Local products where cost allows.
