Since the start of the pandemic, Bude Chess Club has moved online, running their own tournaments as well as competing in county and national tournaments.
As the aptly named ‘Bude Surfers’ they have played in all 3 of the Four Nations Chess League (4NCL) online tournaments.
Each season they have been promoted and are now playing in Division 4 of 6.
Top board for the team is Grandmaster John Nunn, one of whose games for the team was analysed in the Saturday Telegraph this weekend.
The rest of the squad is made up of John’s wife, Women’s FIDE Master Petra Nunn, Chris Constable, Maurice Richards, John Constable and Lloyd Russel (Captain).
Playing on the LiChess platform, teams of 4 compete in a 45 minute game, with 15 seconds added per move, fortnightly on Tuesday evenings. Playing online means that they are able to play from the comfort of their own homes, but all are missing playing in person over the board.
