One of Cornwall’s leading charities is another £1,000 better off thanks to singing group the Boscastle Buoys. With their compelling repertoire of sea shanties and traditional Cornish songs, the team raise money for Cornwall Hospice Care in memory of a friend who died at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell. They’ll next be heard at the charity’s Grand Day Out at the Royal Cornwall Showground on Sunday 29 June.
The Boscastle Buoys presented Cornwall Hospice Care with £1,000 on day two of this year’s Royal Cornwall Show when they burst in to impromptu song at the charity’s stand to illustrate how they raise the money. David Pimm, one of the singers, explains;
‘We sing at events all round North Cornwall and when we do we shake a bucket in support of Cornwall Hospice Care. We do this because a singing friend of ours, Raymond Rogers, who was also a founder member of the Boscastle Buoys, was cared for at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice. I think people appreciate our performances because we have raised around £7,000 so far and I’d like to thank everyone for their continuing support. We’ve been going for around 5 years now after drinking brought us together, though I think we kind of drifted together really, and we usually number around 10.’
Rose Beattie, Major Events Fundraiser for Cornwall Hospice Care, accepted the latest donation from the group at the show:
‘The Boscastle Buoys are great. They bring in a steady stream of donations for our charity and in support of our two adult hospices at Mount Edgcumbe in St Austell and St Julia’s in Hayle. They also appear at our annual Grand Day Out, which is fast approaching. They have a massive amount of fun enjoying their singing, while also remembering their friend and we truly appreciate their remembering us and the work the teams at Cornwall Hospice Care do. All the money they raise comes from Cornwall and is then spent by us for and in Cornwall. It’s a good Cornish partnership.’
Cornwall Hospice Care’s Grand Day Out is on Sunday 29 June from 10am to 5pm at the Royal Cornwall Showground. This year’s major attraction is children’s TV character ‘Mike the Knight’ making personal appearances at intervals throughout the day. The Boscastle Buoys will join a host of other entertainers including children’s favourite Harry Kazzam, high energy band ‘Drumba Samba’ and local singing groups including Rock Choir, Oll an Gwella, the Imerys Singers, Cornish Connection and Voiceworks Community Choir. There’ll be a sports active zone, craft and produce fayre, car boot sale, fun fair, dog and car shows, refreshments, licensed bar and live music. Advance family tickets are available for just £5 by calling 01726 66868 or emailingfundraising@cornwallhospice.
