In a survey of Cornish patients by Kernow Commissioning Group, it seems that some people have found Covid-19 restrictions a struggle in terms of their interactions with health services.
What went well …
82% of respondents said they had contacted their GP during the pandemic. Most people who attended a face to face GP appointment during the pandemic said they felt safe with the use of social distancing and personal protective equipment (PPE).
Some people felt that more information could be available for specific conditions and in general. Additionally, people thanked surgeries and pharmacies for their support during the pandemic.
492 people (83%) said that nothing had stopped or made it difficult for them to contact their GP about symptoms that could be linked to a serious condition such as cancer.
What went less well …
However, 265 people (45%), explained they had avoided contacting their GP during the pandemic, and almost half said this was because they didn’t want to be a burden to the NHS.
124 people (23%) felt they had been unable to access GP or pharmacy services during the pandemic for different reasons including limited appointments, opening times being inaccessible for working people and being unable to get through to book an appointment.
The future of health and dental care in our area
Health care has never seemed more important, and we all laud the unstinting work of those working in the NHS in dealing with the pandemic on top of their normal duties.
But Bude has a greater population than ever before, local surgeries are under more pressure than ever.
NHS dental services are limited and very difficult to access at the current time.
Specialist clinics, often held out of area, are difficult for people to reach, especially if they rely on public transport.
It seems, that in responding to this growing local demand, Bude area needs an expansion of medical and dental services, with more adequate premises and better parking facilities than existing surgeries are currently able to offer.
Bude & Beyond hears that there may be good news ahead on some of these these issues. As soon as we hear anything, we will share it with you.
