A night to remember…on the motorway

As of Monday 4 June 2018, learner drivers are now allowed to drive on motorways when accompanied by an approved driving instructor.

Motorways are some of the safest roads in the country, but there is still a very real need to ensure that new and young drivers gain experience of this fast-paced environment while they have the benefit of a driving instructor sitting next to them.

This will give them the skills and confidence they need to be competent safe drivers while using our motorway network. Drivers can never have enough experience, and should never stop learning.

With younger drivers, lack of experience and over-confidence can lead to collisions.  One such instance involved a young driver from South Devon, 18-year-old Charlie, who, about seven months after passing his driving test, overreacted due to a lack of experience and was involved in a collision that resulted in his car being written off.

Fortunately, Charlie wasn’t injured but he learned a very valuable lesson that night.  One of the things Charlie wanted immediately following the collision was to let his mum and dad know he was ok.  There was, however, a twist in this tale, and one police officer who attended the scene won’t forget that night in a hurry. To find out what the twist is, listen to Charlie’s story on the Learn2Live YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/CBY6QjEvaiY

Roads policing officer for the Devon & Cornwall Police and Dorset Police Alliance, Sgt. Olly Tayler said: “Any measures to improve road safety especially amongst the most vulnerable on our roads, such as young and inexperienced drivers, is welcomed. However, there is no substitute for time spent behind the wheel gaining experience of different road types, conditions and times of the day.”

Learn2Live Learn2Live is a partnership with representatives from local authority road safety teams, fire and rescue services, police, paramedics, family liaison officers, consultants and family speakers. They all speak to groups of young people about their experiences of dealing with the terrible aftermath of road traffic collisions.

Since 2008 over 100,000 students and service personnel have seen Learn2Live presentations across Devon and Cornwall and have learnt how a moment’s madness really can lead to a lifetime of sadness. You can find out more about Learn2Live here: http://learn-2-live.org.uk/
