A new era at The Castle Bude

I’m very excited that Bude Castle is now a supporting sponsor of Bude & Beyond community website. It is wonderful to have their support at a time of positive change as the Castle heralds in a new era. The positivity is pouring forth through new events and ways of thinking which make the Castle an exciting place to go (entry remains free, so how cool is that?) If you thought the Castle might be stuck in its ways, then it is time to revisit – and soon!

More on the heritage side soon as there are exciting times ahead.

Here’s a quick overview of some major forthcoming events:

Gardening Club

We’ve already mentioned on this site the gardening club, which is a form of therapeutic space for anyone wanting to work in the Castle garden. Whether you don’t have a garden and want to do your bit, or whether you maybe feel a little isolated and want to work in the garden with some company, this is a no-lose idea to help make Bude look even more beautiful while also growing  the feel good factor for those involved. Get those green fingers at the ready!

Wedding Fair – 11am – 4pm 19th May. Free entry. All welcome.

You will all be aware by now that the Castle has a massive Wedding Fair ahead to inspire couples planning to tie the knot with a surprising range of ideas to create a perfect day, but this is not just any wedding fair, and to be honest, it sounds quite good fun even if you’re not planning a wedding, so why not pop down anyway?

For a start, there are adorable alpacas for you to meet. Buddy and friends from Cadenza Alapcas will be there for feeding and photo opportunities, but also to book for your wedding. Of course, their welfare is paramount so they will be supervised at all times by their handlers who prioritise their animals.

There will be teepees (tipis), assorted stalls, bridal workshops and talks and massage taster sessions. Along with make up and hair sessions, there will also be photo shoots, all offered by local businesses.

The Fair opens with a performance by Zoe and Jade from URBNStreetZ, for a fun day out for all the family, whether getting married or not!  The Castle’s rooms are now open to book for not only weddings but also renewal of vows, wakes and even baby showers, so here’s a great opportunity to check out the available facilities.

Bude’s Earth Festival  1st-2nd June

A very exciting event given Bude’s pioneering spirit on all things environmental.

The key aims of the festival are to inform the community about local, national and global environmental issues, and what lifestyle changes we can all make to help the planet. Look out for eco-friendly workshops and talks from national and local environmentalists. The Castle galleries will offer a full itinerary of talks on sustainable living initiatives, ocean health, wildlife protection, clean rivers, climate change and the importance of community. Look out for representatives from Shark Trust, Sealife Trust, 2 Minute Besch Clean, Friends of the Earth, Sea Shepherd UK, West Country Rivers Trust and many more.

Practical workshops include Laila Parker Crum from Bude Eco Bricks group, a tie-dye art workshop with artist Bridget Cordory, and a willow weaving session with Angelique Medland. An arts trail will be consist of sculptures from recycled products. Especially interesting for young  people (whose future this is) there will be storytelling for younger children by Ellie Jackson, author of a series of books about the environment, and local students will be putting forward their ideas for protecting the planet.

Heritage Day July 21 st 11 am  – 4 pm

Janine King, meanwhile, is working on Bude Heritage Day, an annual event celebrating Bude’s history. Janine is very excited that Cornwall Museums Wave Project is investing in the Heritage Centre to revamp its virtual and augmented reality audio-visual displays which will really bring history to life. Watch for a separate article on this coming soon.

Other events:

29th June – Wet Felt Picture Making

7th July  – Brass on the Grass 2-4pm (also 28th July, 4th August and 18th August).

24th-26th August Pottery Workshop

Keep an eye on the Castle Facebook page for updates.
